The Dudes of Disruption Men’s Group is built upon contribution and making a difference in the world. It’s one of our four pillars, along with sharing, bringing our A-game, and defining what it means to be a man today. In many ways, contribution is the central principle of all these things. It’s at the heart of our higher purpose, to inspire men to live purposefully and to transform the world. Without an outward perspective of looking to inspire others and lift them up, none of the other three pillars would be possible. For us, contribution is a way living and a perspective on the world.

As a Men’s Group, we practice daily acts of contribution when we’re honest and share, but we also set our sights on a bigger impact. In the two years since the group began, we’ve taken on seven different contribution events, ranging from volunteering our time to raising funds. In the last year alone, we raised over $36,000 for two different organization. That’s huge! And we keep setting our sights on bigger and bigger impacts. That’s why we’re going to Haiti in March 2018.
The Dudes! We're ready!
Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Founded out of a slave rebellion, the country has never fully recovered from the vengeance France and other colonial powers enacted on it. In fact, the country was still paying off the debt of the unshackled slaves well into the 20th century. Infrastructure, government, and the economy have all been compromised. Haiti carries with it a stereotype of violence, laziness, and ineptitude. However, it is just that: a stereotype. When the earthquake hit Haiti in 2010, the country did not explode into violence, as many predicted, but rallied together. It’s that version of Haiti that we’re traveling to and inspiring others to see.

One of our members, Fred Pesce, traveled to Haiti in 2011 to help begin construction on the Heart in Haiti School, the focus of our current contribution effort. Heart in Haiti is a non-profit organization committed to educating the whole child, empowering them to reach their full potential. It’s founded by Haitians, run by Haitians, and benefits Haitians. Unlike many NGOs working in developing countries, Heart in Haiti is a local solution to a local issue: education.

Since 2010, Heart in Haiti has positively impacted more than 2000 people, children and adults alike. 135 students have enrolled in school since its founding. As we raise at least $15,000 for Heart in Haiti over the next four months, we intend to send at least 14 new students to the school next year and raise enough to build Heart in Haiti its first library. The students asked for it themselves when the school polled them on what they believed was most important. Think about that for a moment, and imagine living in a place where the greatest wish your child has is a library to learn in. We intend on helping make that library a reality.

There will be 21 of us going to Haiti in March. This blog will be your place to stay current on our progress, learn about Haiti, and the Heart in Haiti organization. We’re excited for this journey. We hope we inspire you to be excited too.
